NHE host Scott Murphy chats to writer/director Ryan Kruger about his latest feature, “Fried Barry.” A largely improvised, tripped out, eye-scorching alien body snatcher horror which has been going down a storm at this year’s digital edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival.
Over the course of the interview (begins at 2:05), we talk to Ryan about he did not originally intend to make the film as a feature, how it has already built a cult following and how difficult it was shooting a film with over 100 actors. Plus, he goes into the improvised nature of the movie and what made him think actor Gary Green would be perfect for the titular role.
Away from the feature we dig into Ryan’s thought on the current state of film, his love for all things’ 80s cinema and how he wants to challenge the genre norms of South African cinema. He also tries to explain how a “Ryan Kruger Thing” came to be his signature (kind of like a Spike Lee Joint or the like) and what makes a “Ryan Kruger Thing”, a “Ryan Kruger Thing.” Finally, Ryan gives a little taste of what he is possibly working on next.
